Review: A Mirror (Toronto)

Hi friends,

My latest review is up on Next Magazine – for ARC’s production of A Mirror.

This was a fun show. I’m not sure it’s supposed to be fun, but I had a blast.

A Mirror is one of those show-within-a-show-within-a-shows. TLDR: it’s about censorship and authoritarianism. At the back of the theatre, there’s a display featuring banned words that apparently were taken from some sort of real source. The words are all over the place – for example: “women,” “LGBTQ,” “breastfeeding,” “the patriarchy,” and “climate change.” Notably missing was any mention of religion. This totalitarian regime isn’t like a regular totalitarian regime – they’re totally cool with freedom of religious expression!

P.S. Shoutout to Katie from KSPR for being great. I’ve gone too long on this blog without mentioning a PR person. I’m bringing this bit back.

  1. I saw this show in London a few years ago with Johnny Lee Miller and it was excellent. I’m surprised it hasn’t come to Broadway yet. A really interesting show.
