Review: Doc Wutherloom’s Here There Be Monsters (Eldritch Theatre)

Hi internet,

Last night, I went to Eldritch Theatre’s production of “Doc Wuthergloom’s Here There Be Monsters” in Toronto. I’d never been to an Eldritch Theatre company production (besides the magic show they co-produced with Keith Brown), so I wasn’t entirely sure what I was getting myself into.

Eldritch Theatre describes themselves as “the only theatre company in the world to bring you horror, puppets, and magic in one astounding theatrical performance.” For a tonal reference, think the Addams Family, Goosebumps, Edward Scissorhands, Corpse Bride, maybe The Raven (minus a few nevermores) – creepy and spooky, but harmless good fun. Eldritch performs in the intimate but mighty Red Sandcastle Theatre – a storefront theatre in Leslieville.

In practical terms, I’d describe Here There Be Monsters as a magic show with puppets, monsters, and fantastical storytelling. I like the addition of a narrative to magic tricks, as it provides a reason why certain “spells” needs to be performed. The show is presented by Doctor Pretorious Wuthergloom (Eric Woolfe), who is eccentric and British (?) – maybe Trans-Atlantic. I don’t know – some sort of “proper mad scientist” character. Eric is a highly engaging performer. He is exceptional at character work and accents, his comedic timing is spot-on, and he’s great at capitalising on naturally funny improvisational moments. The show moves quickly, I was engaged fully, and it was a fun evening.

I’m leaving my description deliberately vague, as I think this kind of show benefits from maintaining the element of surprise. If you like ghost stories, puppets, magic shows, animated storytelling, and supporting local indy theatre, Here There Be Monsters is right up your alley.

Thanks for the invite, Eldritch Theatre! Doc Wuthergloom’s Here There Be Monsters is playing at the (haunted) Red Sandcastle Theatre on the east end in Toronto until Nov 5, 2023. You can grab tickets here.
