Just a girl, standing in front of the internet, asking them to read her theatre blog.

The Unpublishable Review (that got published)

I honestly thought this one wasn’t going to get published, yet here we are. Link to the article here (which provides a synopsis of the piece).

After seeing this particular work of performance ‘art’, I told my coordinator that I didn’t want to write a review, since I didn’t think the creators would want the type of feedback I would provide. However, I was encouraged to write the review in order to “be a champion for good art by calling out bad art when you see it.”

The thing is, though, I didn’t write this review in order to elevate the quality of theatre in the city. I wrote it because this ‘play’ demonstrated to me just how deeply my colleagues have lost the plot, and by not calling it out, we’re tacitly accepting these ideas. I believe in open dialogue and discussion and exposing yourself to dissenting views, but I do not tolerate propaganda.

No, you don’t need to prove how anti-war you are by counter-protesting 9/11 vigils the days immediately following the attacks, as this piece suggests. You’re not being edgy by making the audience think it may be ‘complicated.’ There is nothing brave about yelling at mourning people. Full stop.

And no, suicide is not an act of righteous resistance to be celebrated, as the piece implies. It is a tragedy.

This show received numerous grants from various government bodies. Get your act together, people.
